is an unconventianal game of Snakes & Ladders
Drainpipes & Clotheslines is a game of Snakes and Ladders inspired by Kowloon Walled City, as documented in City of Darkness by Greg Girard and Ian Lambot.
The game board measures 18” x 18”, and the pieces and spinner are movable plastic parts.
The game was designed using City of Darkness as a reference throughout the design process. The book does a wonderful job of explaining the everyday lives of the people that lived there. I wanted to combine the chaos of an organically built city with the rules of a board game. The arrows are designed based on the real directions written on the city walls, and the pieces are inspired by the mailmen that traversed the city’s 14 stories in an unlabeled, unregulated addresses. The objective of the game is to reach the rooftop at the end of your mail route.
